Fumio Following text is from Nick's List Fumio Kubo, January 2004 Impact (Skydiving) Fumio is a long time BASE jumper I first met at Bridge Day in 1991. He is the first Japanese with an interest in BASE jumping any of us had ever seen. His English isn't very good, but he soaked up enough to make a successful first BASE jump from the bridge that year. I printed a photograph and some letters Fumio sent me on his return to Japan in the Fixed Object Journal. And over the years I received many more letters from him describing his adventures in BASE jumping. At the time Fumio had Japan all to himself as far as BASE jumping is concerned. He opened many sites including a nice 450-foot bridge and became the catalyst for BASE jumping in his home country. Fumio is killed during a skydiving tandem jump. He and his passenger experienced a drogue in tow and then a drogue reserve entanglement. The following is from one of Fumio's many friends. "Fumio was an amazing character. All of the rebelliousness and nonconformity that seems squeezed out of most Japanese from an early age is deposited in this one man. When I asked him how I could reach him when I visited Tokyo, his response was, "call police--they know me."
