It has been over ten years since Dwain and The Chief started the ABA, and what an innovative time in Australian and World BASE History. My jumping began just over ten years ago and was part of this classique time. Classing myself as a cautious jumper, my brother and I were the second BASE brothers in the sport and started in a very unconventional way. Our first jump was off a building crane in the middle of Brisbane. This was the same day we meet Dwain and The Chief, and our lives would never be the same again. We were part of the 1997 11 Way World Record off Bungonia. Only just with my bro having a canopy wrap with Torben. Our weekends in the mountains were hardcore. We opened new sites like the Landslide, where we actually landed in the landslide rubble. I have memories of all-in brawls with Blue Mountain no-neck Rugby players, and our comfortable leather lounge diggs of The Family Hotel ‘s TV room. This was the beginning explorations to the open expression of BASE jumping. Up until this time if you where caught BASE Jumping you could lose your Skydiving licence. No one was doing slider jumps. Velcro rigs were the new rave and we all jumped ‘Poosters’ with pride. Then there was Dwain and The Chief. They were men on a mission and the sport of BASE Jumping has a lot to thank them for. They bought it to the people with magazine articles and TV interview and they wanted to be like most of rest of the world: Legal and excepted. Dwain introduced Aerial’s, and Greg: ‘The Ledge of Terror Bush Wank’. We all had our rolls. As the Ten year mark rolls past I am writing to all those lads and girls who have played their rolls. Just look where we are today. Nice work. Captain Cave Man |
