Based on the Chinese media report, he is in the process of rescuing, and still has heart-beating. the following is the coverage from Chinese media Shanghai Treated to Skydiving Spectacle A team of 16 international skydivers successfully finished a group jump yesterday from the top of Jinmao Tower, the tallest building on the Chinese mainland. This event, organized by the Shanghai Sports Bureau and China Jinmao Group Co Ltd, was the country's first BASE (Building Antenna Span Earth) jumping event. At 3:10 pm, the first jumper, Terje Halvorsen from Norway, jumped from the 420.8-meter-high tower. After several seconds of free-falling, he opened his parachute to the applause of thousands onlookers who had waited for three hours to watch the event. Later, jumpers from the United States, Norway, Mexico, Sweden and the Netherlands jumped either alone or in pairs. By the end, the 16 people finished the event with a group jumping with national flags. The average time for each jumper in the sky was estimated to have been about 30 seconds. Keeping safety in mind, they were asked to open the parachute at least at 200 meters high. "The feeling in the sky was a little scared, though I had experienced (BASE jumping) about 170 times... But when the parachute opened, it was really -- wow!'' said Lisa Denise Boger from the United States, one of two women jumpers who took part in the event. "I flew like a bird and enjoyed the view. Shanghai is really beautiful.'' Boger, together with Denise Maria Williams, showed the crowd a pair jump. Because the wind was somewhat stronger than expected, their landing was at an intersection about 30 meters away from the destination. The jump drew big applause from the crowd. "But the landing was good!'' said Boger. "And the construction of Jinmao is the most amazing I have ever seen and jumped.'' "To most of us, the Jinmao Tower is the highest building we have ever jumped,'' said Harry Parker from the United States, the lead skydiver who has jumped from atop about 20 high buildings around the world. "Actually, I have waited for years to be part of 'China's first high-rise jump','' Halvorsen said. It has been a dream of his to jump from China's highest skyscraper since it was built. BASE jumping originated in the United States in 1975. It then became popular in Europe. The jumpers are expected to not only be brave, but should also have a wide knowledge of wind direction, speed and gravitation. (China Daily October 6, 2003 |

Australian skydiver injured in Shanghai jump October 5, 2004 - 7:35PM An Australian parachutist was injured on Tuesday in a jump off China's tallest skyscraper during a skydiving exhibition. Roland Simpson was rushed to a hospital after he jumped off the 421-metre Jinmao Tower and failed to "land safely", the official Xinhua News Agency and other media said. They didn't give any details of his injuries or how the accident occurred. Simpson, 35, was among 38 skydivers from 16 countries taking part this week in an exhibition of base jumping. Base is an acronym for building, antenna, span and earth - the places used by participants instead of planes to make jumps. Phone calls to organisers of the event in Shanghai's Pudong financial district weren't immediately answered. Xinhua said the event continued after Simpson's accident. A base jumping website, http://www.basejump.org, said Simpson, a former world champion known as Slim, had landed on a roof adjacent to the landing area and was unconscious. The accident happened as he attempted to perform a jump wearing a wing suit, designed to give jumpers the ability to glide and manoeuvre mid-air. No other details about his injuries were available, the website said. The site said Simpson was a highly experienced jumper, having logged in excess of 1,200 jumps. He has competed in and won numerous competitions including those on the International Pro Base Circuit (IPBC), which organises legal base jumping competitions. Participants were to jump off the 88-storey Jinmao Tower, free-fall for up to six seconds, then open their parachutes about 200 metres from the ground, organisers said earlier. The event was to be broadcast nationwide, although it wasn't clear whether that was under way at the time of Simpson's accident. This is the second year the event has been held in Shanghai. The skydiving exhibition is one of a series of sporting events meant to promote Shanghai, China's commercial hub. Last month, the city hosted China's first Formula One Grand Prix car race at a new $US320 million ($444 million) track. The city also holds boat races along its historic riverfront. The company that owns the Jinmao Tower says it spent the equivalent of several hundred thousand dollars to sponsor the jump, including the cost of a special jumping platform. A similar highly successful competition was held last December off the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - the world's tallest twin skyscrapers. Australian Jumpers dominated this competition and are regarded as some of the most skilled in the world. Results are posted on www.basejump.org The Australian B.A.S.E. Association's (A.B.A.) website is a valuable portal for Australian jumpers and has been instrumental in diseminating safety information to jumpers a spokesperson said. "Jumping equipment and techniques has advanced so much nowadays that incidents of this type are few and far between. We see less of the 'No Fear' T shirt wearing types involved in the sport." "In fact compared to activities such as rock fishing, where an average of 50 Australians a year die, and golfers by the score are struck by lightning etc jumping is relatively safe." "Can you beleive that in this day and age that fast food outlets are allowed to sell to already obviously obese people? Where is their 'duty of care?'" "Fortunately we live in a free and democratic country where we are allowed to exercise our freedom." He said. |

Hi, my name is Jason and I'm a chinese national. I've just got news update from a China's website. Here I translate it briefly to you all. Simpson had his trial jump at 19:25 on Oct 5, Peking time. His initial execution was smooth and comfortable.
Webmasters Note: Due to the nature of the incident the celebrity of 'Slim' and the hits this site receives after careful consideration I have conceded to the numerous recent requests and have edited this post slightly. I have done this as the article is: - 'highly speculative'
- 'extremely graphic', and most probably
- 'bullshit' given that a journalist wrote it.
Thank you Jason for taking the time to translate and post this article to assist informing his friends via the website! If anyone has a problem with this please familiarise yourself with this sites Acceptable Use Policy here. Hey Jason, thanks for the translation. He's got a lot of friends all round the world who will all have trouble getting info. Of course, as you said, the press can get it wrong and have a desire to get a story out before the facts. We shouldn't jump too quickly onto any news we get through them. Does anyone know if his 'better half' is over there with him? If so, can you email me rather than post it up on here. Thanks from Japan. |

Don't mention Kieran. Sorry to everyone if my translation disturbs you. It's been a big mishap and I feel sorry for 'slim', too, and hope he'll pull through it. The report released by that press that I quoted is trust-worthy as it's a reputable source of news. However the text may be a little disturbing but I just wanted to get the ppl aware of the incident. Sorry folks, let's hold our prayer to 'slim'. |

Skydiver brain dead - Herald Sun Australia 08oct04 AN Australian skydiver seriously injured after jumping off China's tallest building is brain dead. Roland Simpson, 35, was listed as "brain dead" by neurological experts at Shanghai's Oriental Hospital, China's Chengdu Business Daily said. "The concerned departments of Shanghai have placed much importance on this and have brought in a lot of neurological experts for diagnoses. Most of the experts said Simpson's condition conformed to brain death," a head nurse said. Simpson failed to land properly after leaping from Shanghai's 420.5m Jin Mao Tower during a practice on Tuesday for an event sponsored by the Chinese Government to celebrate National Day. |

Throughout life we have different heroes depending on what goal we decide to accomplish. When I decided to get into BASE aerials, Dwain and Slim became my heroes and as one does with heroes, I put them both up on a pedestal. I watched videos of them and was amazed at the acrobatics they could pull off! Then one dark night in California, I unexpectedly ran into them while walking out to the exit point of a bridge. They welcomed me, a new BASE jumper in their sport. I wanted to tell them how much I looked up to them, respected them and wanted to be like them. I could not believe how friendly these guys were! After the jump, they told me they were going out to jump a dam and that I should head out there - I did - and as I was sneaking out to the middle to jump alone I heard a "pssssp" from the bushes, it was Dwain. I said, "where is Slim?" Dwain replied, "ahhh mate, he only has three rigs so he's somewhere in the bushes packing and I'm just waiting for him." I thought packing in the dark?! In the bushes?! Only three rigs?! It was nearing dawn and I asked, "how many jumps you guys make tonight?" Dwain replied, "I think we've made seven so far." At the exit I watched, amazed at their skill as they each did multiple flips. As we walked up the road back to the car, I told them how amazing their jumps were and how cool aerials in BASE are. Both Dwain and Slim told me they were only scratching the surface of aerials in BASE... A few months later, at a campfire in the middle of the desert, Slim and I told our party that we were going back to the top of a volcanic neck cliff to make our second jump. Talk about going hard, earlier that day, Slim mistook a cholla cactus for a handrest. He actually turned green and went into shock as Anne pulled out about 50 barbed prickers from the palm of his hand – holy shit, that must have been painful... As Slim and I were hiking up that night, the wind began to get stronger and stronger and as we reached the top it was near gale force wind. I knew I was turning back, but Slim told me he was jumping. I thought he was nuts! He jumped, I heard a crack, and then I saw his canopy flying away from the cliff back to the campfire. As I was hiking down I was thinking, "how did he do that, how did he know he could make it?" It was amazing to me. I wanted to have the knowledge, the skill and the experience my heroes had. I wanted to be like them and have their ability. They changed my life and they inspired me more than anyone else - in the sport of BASE and in life. They were both genuine, admirable and two of the nicest guys I had ever met. Later, I learned that they worked very hard to get to that level of greatness. Nobody had the passion for BASE jumping that Dwain and Slim had. Nobody went as hard as Dwain and Slim. These were my heroes. I will never forget them. They will forever be on that pedestal. I know they are going hard, joking and laughing somewhere together again… My heart and deepest condolences go out to Slim's loved ones. I deeply regret hearing this news. JJ |

Thank you JJ... Thanks for calling, Nick. It was much better hearing it from you than reading it on line. Condolences to Andrea and all of Slim's family, friends, and loves ones. I am awed by his courage, determination, and perseverance in coming back to a sport that had battered and broke him once before. He faced down the demon of fear after his recovery and re-entered the sport with humor and panache. "...and cripples can fly.." he said at exit. What an inspiration that was, as I was also coming back from a shattered leg. Thank you Slim, for your strength and courage. Thank you for setting such a great example in BASE. Thank you for being such a good friend and enriching the lives of so many people around me. Thank you for dancing with me in Lysebotn and making me look so good, like I actually knew what I was doing! You were a leader in so many respects, and you will be sorely missed. I remember Slim at BD99, or maybe it was 2000, well after midnight in the lobby, with 3 or 4 other blokes, circling and dicussing a round laid out to pack. THere was much technical discussion, movement from canopy to line, back to canopy, down to container, back to canopy, flake, fold, re-flake, re-fold, back to lines, check container, back to canopy, examine, discuss, hour after hour this went on. Beer after beer. The blokes were obviously trying to learn all they could from the master. After many hours of this, finally Slim decided it was just too late, to drunk to pack, and got up and left. It was a funny scene to watch, and I'll always remember Slim, cheery as always, drunk as hell, but spending his time at BD helping out others. RIP Tree |

Slim, Now you have no more limits for jumping all the cliffs around where you are. Have some good jumps with the ones who went there before. As usual evaluate a huge big way for all of us together on your new cliffs. Open some nice spots. You don't need any more canopies and protections, now you fly! You are now part of it, in a rock, in the wind or whatever. Don't blow too strong when we are in the exit. We'll join you soon, for some new figures and f..cking nice jumps. C-ya soon. Love and respect. |

It is terrible to hear of the passing of another person that is a pioneer in their sport. From what I have read, Slim is widely known and loved. I am sure that I speak from many that are outside the BASE community who want to share condolences, I do, in particular from my end of town - the white-water kayaking community. We share the same motivation, we are aware of the many possible ends. My prayers for all who are greiving from this tragic loss - AMEN |

After spending 4 years in australia, and lurking various BASE forums in the past 5 years, i feel like a small part of the aussie BASE scene (even though i only did one jump down under, and i will never be as hardcore as you guys). Slim is one of the aussies i was looking forward to meeting one time at an exit point... I was so sure i was going to bump into him somewhere in the world. Heard so much about you from your friends, read so many posts of yours and had so much respect for your person... I didnt want to post anything as i was sure you were gonna pull through this as you did when you had your cliff strike.. Words can't express my sorrow. To his loved ones, his family and to the aussie BASE scene.. My thoughts are with you. And to Slim: fly free and may the force be with you. Always... |

I feel compelled to write a few words... I've only briefly ever heard about base jumping having seen it a couple of times on tv, so after reading the article on the Sydney Morning Herald about the tragic accident and the link to this site, I logged on here to find out more... and what I found out is what a wonderful and well loved person Roland Simpson or "Slim" was. It's sad, when accidents as this happen and the feeling of a life taken away so early. I am sure however he'd be looking down upon all of you now with a good cheer in his heart, seeing all the love thats clearly evident from all his friends and family. Everyone will reunite one day, up above. My regards, David Z/Sydney Australia |

I don't know anything about the sport but I was really upset reading about the article in the sydney morning herald. I logged on to this website & I was touched by everybody's kind words, it was really heart warming. I was reading about his prognosis & then I started to read that he had died. I was in total shock as I wasn't expecting it. I feel for all of his family & friend's & I hope that they know that there are so many caring people out there. He looked like a brave soul. I can't believe too that his friend had passed a year earlier on the same day. I too remember reading that article. If there is any sense in any of this, at least know that two great friends who shared so much, are together again. My thoughts are with you all.. |

It was only after two days and a Salsa party that Jimmy told me about their exploits! I studied with and knew roland as a young and crazy guy at uni in canberra although I would never suggest that we were friends. He was always a person of infectious spirit and irrepresable humour. he was universally liked and shone with unbeleivable energy and enthusiasm for everything he did. Although we had very little in common, it does not suprise me to read here he was so well liked and respected. It saddens me to hear of his death. The world needs more people like Roland. They remind us of the value of a life lived without restraint Respectful condolences to his family and to the many people who obviously had love for him. Carl |

12 months have passed since we went through the pain of DW accident. I came on here to write a few words only to find more bad news.. Condolences to Slims wife, family, friends, and admirers. The thing I liked the most about Slim was his incredibly infectious zest for milking every last bit of enjoyment, action, and adventure out of life. I found this to be very motivating and invigorating. It was great to see a person with a "can do" attitude. Most humans would winge and complain if they had the wonky body Slim had. Love your work, your stories, and your adventures. I think Slim would like it best if we all followed his example. Moje Saocesce Stay Safe Good Luck Have Fun |

Roland, We have done some cool stuff over the years, some of it not so clever but always a blast. I going to miss seeing your happy face, it will be strange not having you dropping around for a visit, at about dinner time as luck would have it....Your timing was always spot on. I am very sad at this time, I will not remain sad but celebrate the life we shared, as this is what you would have also done for me. Andrea, Sue, Craig, Kylie and Clare my thoughts are with you, give the handsome one a big hug from me. Richard |

Slimmer, we were playing tug of war the other day. It was the same day Dwain died a year ago and he wanted you to go play with him. We wanted you over here and he wanted you over there so we were tugging over you. I went and visited you in the Shanghai ICU, I wasn't allowed there but barged my way in to see you and we were still playing tug of war. All your friends wanted you, Andrea, your sisters, brother, your Mum, all you family, and your friends at work. Dwain and Nik wanted you. They won. Love you Slim. Will miss you heaps! Anne |

Slim words seem so inadequate to express how devastating your departure from this earth is. You were there giving me encouragement when I first started Skydiving and again helped so much when I began camera work. Then you were there for my first base jumps and looked after me in KL. You were an inspiration and a good friend that will be missed by everyone whose life you touched. Craig I know how much Slim meant to you and how proud of him you were. I can only offer my deepest condolences to you and your family. Andrea I can't imagine how you must be feeling. I'll see you soon so we can talk then but my thoughts are with you. Be strong. Slim, Even though I only visited with you a couple of times I'm glad you became a part of our family when you married my cousin. You were so handsome on your wedding day and I know for a fact you completed Andrea's life. With your enthusiasm for life and adventure you were definitely her match. You will be greatly missed but I know you will still be with Andrea in your own way. My condolences to your family, especially my beautiful cousin Andrea. Take care until we meet again, love Rhondi |

No words can express the sorrow of losing a dear friend. But for your family, I can't even imagine their pain of losing their son...brother...husband.... Slim, I was so looking forward to our catch-up in Sydney later in the month, on our salsa and hearing your latest stories. I never expected to hear them like this.... Your zest for life; your passion for your sport and that unquenchable thirst for adventure; your kick out of those dips and those elbows (on my head!!!)on the dance floor; your party tricks; your friendliness, your encouragement and your time for all; your infectious smile and your open embrace....you were a package that will never be matched. You lived life to the max and left the way you would have chosen. We love you and we will miss you, but will cherish the memories we have of you. My deepest condolences to Sue, Andrea, Craig, Kylie and Clare. You're all in my thoughts and I will see you soon. Anna |

I will always remember Slim - whom I have first met at my very first BASE jumps in Norway in summer 1997 with the BR-group - as an extraordinary person with a very special kind of humor. It was unbelievable to me that he came back to the sport following his accident with serious results. Hard to understand and accept what happened now. I am sad and will always remember the good time we had in Norway. Fly forever Slim, it was good having met you and shared some great jumps together. Bernhard Frankfurt, Germany |

It was only this morning when checking the news from NZ that I realised this had turned worse. Respect and condolences to Slim's wife, family and friends. Neil-NZ |

My dear Slim – So many feelings and thoughts in my head right now. I was allowed and proud to be part of your life for many years and it brought so much to my life being next to such a strong willed, lively and intense person as you were. I admired your spirit, the fact that you did not accept boundaries and I simply had made an eternal place in my heart for you. You made me the Austri(al)ian I still am today (living back in Vienna since 2001 for all those who know me). I still remember driving you around in the get-away car when you had less than 10 BASE jumps. Remember El CAP and running from the dogs in December 1993? Checking out European, American and Australian mountains, buildings for opportunities to leap off? And the terrible pink filming helmet I built for you? - Honestly BASE was not always my friend – it frightened me terribly, I was angry at it – but BASE was always there next to you. You were so proud of your pioneering in BASE, you said it made you feel alive and you wanted to show people how to make it safe. I wished you so much that you succeed in this. I wish your wife and your family all possible strength!! I am so so sorry Where-ever you are spreading your wings now you stay in our hearts and you will be present through your stories, your incredible charisma. Slim – send us one of your bright smiles now and then. We will feel it. Helma (alias The Boss) |

slim, i know you can see us from up above and are feeling the love that is being sent your way. the Lord is good. He gave you a life many people could only dream of. from the moment i met you, i remember telling andrea she did good. you were a keeper! somehow, you were the missing piece, the part that completed her. together, you possessed a love that none could deny. i remember the first time i saw you and andrea dance. my gosh....i was in awe! didn't think anyone out there could be her match ! and there you were, leading her. it was if you two were the only ones on the dance floor. you were in your own little world. it was beautiful! thank you for loving andrea so much and making her whole being come alive whenever she was with you or whenever your name was mentioned. the love you shared is forever. so until we meet again, dear slim..... my aloha to you & your family. |

Events such as climbing up the flag pole, folding up parachutes on Monday mornings in the Information Centre and picking up the 'beast' are some of my fondest memories. Injured Australian may not be brain dead October 10, 2004 Diplomats called in over 'brain dead' skydiver An Australian BASE jumper badly injured in a jump from China's tallest skyscraper may not be brain dead and his condition is improving, a hospital official and media report said. Roland Simpson, 35, suffered serious injuries last Tuesday when his parachute lines became twisted and he landed on a building rather than the patch of lawn designated for the jump. Hospital officials, the Australian embassy and the Shanghai Government - which organised the jump as a publicity event for the city - have given no details of his condition. A Chinese newspaper last week reported he was brain dead, citing unidentified hospital sources. However, a receptionist at Shanghai East Hospital's intensive care unit said hospital president Liu Zhongmin on Saturday announced an improvement in Simpson's condition. "He has taken a turn for the better. He's not brain dead or anything as the reports were saying," said the man, who asked that his name not be used. Shanghai's state-controlled media did not report Liu's remarks. However, the Beijing Evening News quoted Liu denying Simpson was brain dead, and said he was still receiving care. Advertisement Advertisement "His blood pressure is stable. Now we are trying to revive his brain and support his breathing. We are not now making the appraisal that he's brain dead," Liu was quoted as saying. "The biggest problem is his brain injury. Recovery from a brain injury takes a long time," Liu said. Last week, Simpson's brother Craig posted a message on the Australian BASE Association's website saying Simpson was effectively dead when he landed. "It took 20 minutes to bring him back but after 20 minutes of no oxygen to his brain there is nothing left and he won't be coming back," Craig Simpson's message said. Shanghai's Chengdu Business Daily last week reported Simpson was listed as brain dead by neurological experts at the hospital. "The concerned departments of Shanghai have placed much importance on this and have brought in a lot of neurological experts for diagnoses," a hospital head nurse told the paper. "Most of the experts said Simpson's condition conformed to brain death." Simpson, known to his friends as Slim, was among 38 highly-experienced base jumpers from 16 nations invited by the Shanghai Sports Bureau to take part in the jump off the 421-metre Jinmao Tower. Simpson was injured in a practice jump the morning of the event, which went ahead as planned that afternoon. Base jumping - an acronym for building, antenna, span and earth - refers to jumping with a parachute from a permanent surface rather than skydiving from an airplane. |

After visiting you in the hospital after the 'oops' three years ago, I asked you whether laying there with a variety of broken bones was going to stop you jumping. You said 'Everytime they adjust my catheter I think maybe, but then I think..NAH!' Im not a basejumper, but we spent a fantastic New Years together, had lots of fancy ballroom dancing, drank a fair amount of tecquila together, Ive even lent you a shirt (Im a size 8 and it looked, mmmm, interesting on you)and best of all heaped the hot and steaming on all those with too much ego in this sport and others. I have had my life in your hands a number of times, and felt supremely confident..something that a self-confessed scaredy cat would rarely be able to admit. There are few people that you meet in life who encourage you to live your own life all the more richly. Slim was one of those people, and Im glad I had the experience. My sincere condolences to his family and to all those who have been touched by him. No more nervous pisses to test the wind eh mate, but you wont need one where you are. x |

I knew Roland a long time ago. During high school I knew him from Kambah Venturers bush walks and at uni I knew him from geography and forestry field trips. He was always a funny guy up to some kind of mischief and always good for a laugh. My friend and I were remembering him and some of the other forestry guys and their antics only recently. I'm sorry I didn't keep in contact with him after I left uni 13 years ago. My deepest condolences to Roland's family and friends. Don't really know what else to say except that I remember the good times with Roland (aka Slim). Donna from Canberra |

Hey roland. You were a mad mad nut at school and at Uni. I remember break-dancing with you in the squash courts and at various formals ( although perhaps thats best left forgotten ). How many bikes did we total testing the dirt race tracks in the area ? Your status at ANU bar was almost legendary, but then you were a forestry student After losing contact with you after uni, it seems now a crime that I only just recently re-established a long lost friendship. You were a best mate at school for over 10 years - Dont go changing mate. You are, and have been an inspiration for so many people. This forum is testament to the influence you have had on so many people - and that can never be lost or forgotten. You will be missed mate Stu |

Doctors have released no further information regarding Roland Simpson’s medical condition. All statements to the contrary have originated from unreliable sources. The last statement released by doctors treating Roland was that his brain was unresponsive and he requires the assistance of a respirator. It is too early to make statements or speculate about Roland’s final prognosis. |

I have just spoken with family members in Shanghai who have asked me to pass on this message: On behalf of the Simpson Family, 1. Please don’t believe any speculative messages/posts on the baseboard regarding Slim’s condition or any other information – the family is on the spot and knows what’s going on and will post information themselves directly. 2. Even if people do know information, please do not post them as this can be emotional and upsetting for family members and friends especially in Shanghai at the moment. 3. The Family would like everyone to know they have been receiving outstanding help from all the doctors concerned, the Australian consulate and the building management in Shanghai – which is greatly appreciated. 4. Slim’s family wish to pass on to everyone who has posted their best wishes that they are also greatly appreciated and are being passed onto Slim. They also appreciate the BASE community’s interest and they will be kept up to date and informed of developments by the family themselves. Thank you all |

This tape was the very reason that I started base-jumping. If the family contacts me directly, I would be willing to burn this vhs onto DVD and send them a copy. This offer is _NOT_ good for anyone else, but the Family. (sorry). I can only be contacted by this form as I do not want to post my email on this site to reduce SPAM.
